If it seems like all of a sudden everyone was talking on a cell phone consider this: it took more than 21 years for color televisions to reach 100 million consumers, more than 90 years for landline service to reach 100 million consumers and less than 17 years for wireless to reach 100 million consumers.
In 2006, there were approximately 219.4 million subscribers in the U.S., representing more than 72 percent of the total U.S. population. Of those subscribers, 60 million were teenagers. And, on a global level, handset sales were expected to reach 986 million by the end of last year.
Not only is the number of cell phone subscribers continuing to grow,” said Jennifer Taylor, SVP of Marketing for eSecuritel. But most people are taking their cell phones with them everywhere they go. This is especially true of teenagers.
The combination of an indispensable tool and its mobility results in millions of lost, damaged or stolen cell phones by subscribers who are used to having their cell phone with them at all times. Not surprisingly, the New York Subway system reports that cell phones are the most frequently lost item on the subway.
